Michael first got a taste for windsurfing in the late 80s during family holidays in North Wales. However, it wasn’t until 2000 when he finally took up windsurfing as a regular hobby and joined a club where he could sail as often as possible. The buzz from windsurfing is hard to match and this has kept him hooked for all these years, along with the desire to constantly improve his skills and push himself to his limits!
Michael started out as a dedicated freestyler and briefly dabbled in waves but in 2007 he borrowed a GPS and immediately acquired his taste for speed and slalom. He was crowned the UK amateur slalom champion in 2010 and continues to compete regularly on the national circuit and the occasional international event. Nowadays, Michael is something of a speed and slalom all-rounder (fin and foil) but also really enjoys wingfoiling.
Behind the scenes, Michael is responsible for the technology + timekeeping at Weymouth Speed Week and recent Prince of Speed / World Championship events. He also provides independent technical advice to the guys running GPS-Speedsurfing.com and various other software developers. He is regarded as one of the authorities on GPS technology within the speedsurfing world and is always happy to share his knowledge.
One of Michael’s most quirky achievements was being the first person to solve a Rubik’s cube whilst windsurfing (and windfoiling). The videos and associated news stories can easily be found with the help of Google!
