How did the new generation of the Magic Wave 2026 come to life?
JP Australia shaper Werner Gnigler explains the idea and the unique features behind our new designed all-round waveboard concept.

NEW MAGIC

JP-Australia has completely redesigned its all-round waveboard, the Magic Wave. Shaper Werner Gnigler reveals how the new model is meant to unfold its magic.

Waveboards need flex! That’s what provides drive and also durability.

The Magic Wave has always been known as your all-round wave board. How do you improve an all-rounder without having to compromise?
The Magic Wave is still meant to cover the widest possible range of use and adapt to a variety of conditions. Since wave conditions are so diverse, it’s naturally difficult to build a board that works everywhere. In developing the Magic Wave, we focused on creating a board for all kinds of spots, whether you ride hard-core or soft-core wave conditions. The Magic Wave is a compact board, yet it covers a wide range of use to handle radical wave moves and rotations on the wave.

What exactly has changed in the shape?
The sizes have become a little more compact, while the nose sections have been shaped slimmer. In return, the tail is now somewhat wider.

How does a wider tail go together with radical turning abilities?
We use a bottom concept with concaves and V. This means that, as a shaper, I can completely decouple the rocker line along the center from the rail shape. This gives the boards a flat planing surface, which in combination with the wider tail provides more speed and early planing. In the rail area, the board benefits from the interplay of concaves and V, complemented by rocker in certain parts of the rails. We also moved the footstraps further inward. This allows the board to be ridden tightly and with variability, despite the wider tail. An optimized fin positioning also enabled us to make use of this advantage in rougher conditions. So, even with the wider tail, the board can be ridden very radically and stays secure in bigger waves thanks to the slightly more parallel outline.

Is the Magic Wave a board for hobby wave sailors, or would you also recommend it to very experienced riders?
We’ve already used the Magic Wave in World Cup events at spots like Tenerife and Sylt. I tested it with Gerd am Meer, one of the best German wave riders. So, the Magic Wave is suitable for both advanced riders and the recreational windsurfer who simply wants to have fun.

Were the boards modified for the pros, or are they 1:1 the same shapes?
No! We use 100 percent production boards in the World Cup. Our team riders use different shapes. This basically applies to all boards our surf tour riders use. Building custom boards for our team riders wouldn’t make sense, since no pro can perform well with a board unless it is tailored exactly to them.

Despite the wider tail, the board can still be ridden radically and remains stable in big waves

Your S-Tec technology is described as being more premium compared to the current 2025 model. What’s behind it?
The basic construction is similar – PVC sandwich material, local reinforcements of carbon and fiberglass, and so on are applied over the foam cores. With the S-Tec construction we use more high-quality S-glass. For the finish, we went for a custom look, which looks classy and saves quite a bit of weight.

Less carbon, more fiberglass – to outsiders that doesn’t necessarily sound like an upgrade …
In the wave segment, most brands no longer build full-carbon boards. Even among surfers you never see carbon surfboards. Why? Full-carbon boards are often too stiff. In a turn, an S-glass board flexes a little more, which gives drive in the turn. Flex is also a benefit for hard landings. Of course, that doesn’t mean we don’t use carbon layers at all – for example in the standing area.

You say that the new Magic Wave has become a bit more turny. So who still needs the Ultimate Wave?
There is certainly some overlap. But whoever surfs proper down-the-line conditions every now and then will get even more turning performance out of the Ultimate. Plus, the Ultimate Wave as a quad offers that unique carving sensation that only quads can deliver. So it’s less a question of better or worse, but rather of taste – wave sailors are always individualists.
