Gran Canaria World Cup 2025
PWA Wave World Cup in Pozo with more than 50 knots of wind! The entire JP team rose to the occasion — from the youngest
The entire JP team rose to the occasion — from the youngest talents to the most seasoned veterans, everyone showcased their skill, determination, and passion. With multiple podium finishes and standout performances across all divisions, we’re incredibly proud of the team’s achievements. Here’s a quick look back at a truly action-packed week in Pozo!
Pro Men:
Having won the event last year, Marino Gil Gherardi was chomping at the bit to show the world what he could do in the absolutely nuclear conditions that were on offer for the Men’s single and double eliminations.
With winds gusting from 40-50 knots, all the sailors were on their smallest sails and the action was non-stop and nail biting due to the intense conditions, every minor mistake could result in injury and / or lost and broken gear. Marino absolutely charged through the single elimination, winning all of his heats until the final, beating both eventual event winner, Philip Koster, and 2nd place finisher, Marcilio Browne on the way, consistently posting heat score totals above 30 points. In the Final of the single elimination, the action was some of the craziest ever seen in Pozo.
Marino and Marcilio started the final with a massive push loop forward off the same wave, Philip Koster also scored close to 10 points for a push forward.
For the battle of the 2nd jump, it came down to the double forwards and both Marcilio and Philip were able to score close to 10 points with their stalled doubles early on and then concentrate on wave riding. Marino racked up some solid wave scores to get himself into contention for the win with a wave-ride total of 12.12 points but it was clear he was searching for that trademark stalled double forward to put himself in the lead. The ramp came to him right at the very end of the heat and, true to form, he soared up in to what would have been the highest of all the stalled doubles in the final but right as he was coming down from the jump, a mega gust hit him and forced him to miss the landing, resulting in the judges scoring it as a crash.
Still, 3rd place in one of the all-time finals was a rewarding result for Marino and his performance in that final solidifies Marino as one of the greatest Pozo sailors of all time.
In the double elimination, Marino started extremely strong, defeating an on-fire Marc Pare with a very solid performance and then came up against Marcilio Browne. This time, Marino scored a perfect 10 for his push loop forward and beat Marcilio in the waves but could not find the ramp for his signature stalled double, while Marcilio was able to find one and that ended up being the difference once again so Marino had to settle for 3rd place.
3 years in a row on the podium of one of the most spectacular events in the windsurfing world has to feel good. Congratulations Marino!
To top off Marino’s event, he also won one of the most hectic super sessions of all time, where Men, Women, Youths and Juniors all set out to attack the bunker for a moto-cross style windsurf jumping bonanza, and this time, Marino was able to find the ramp for a perfect stalled double forward in between the Crowd.
Robby Swift and Morgan Noireaux both sailed solid performances but struggled to pull out their usual routines in the incredibly strong winds and ultimately had to settle for =17th place. Anton Richter put on some really strong heat performances, managing to land some of his best doubles in competition, despite being so overpowered on 3.3, showing his potential for years to come. He ended up with a 21st place.
Men U21
The U21 division were treated to some of the best conditions of the event during the double elimination with nuclear winds and solid waves, allowing them to put on an incredible display of what the next generation of windsurfers has in store for us in coming years.
Anton Richter reveled in the super strong winds, building on his performances in the pro-division, producing many solid displays on his 3.3.
He showcased super high back loops and stalled forwards and stomped some massive doubles, allowing him to advance into 3rd place in this extremely hotly contested stepping stone division. Congratulations Anton on another U21 podium!
Boys U13
Rocco Swift had his first ever taste of windsurfing competition in the U13 division, having never sailed on port tack before, it was an experience for him and all the other young sailors, motivating each other like never before.
Rocco finished 3rd in the U13 division at just 10 years of age, and we can’t wait to see what the future will bring for our aspiring little waterman.
Masters
Congratulations to Michael Viscovich for finishing 4th in the Masters division, also held in some really epic conditions. Michael put on a great display of windsurfing to finish 3rd in the single elimination but was then narrowly beaten in his heat in the double elimination by an on-fire Toni Pijoan.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in this iconic event and thank you to Bjorn Dunkerbeck and family for the monumental effort of putting this event on.
