The 2013 Formula Windsurfing World Championship for the divisions Junior, Youth & Masters were held last week at Lake Neusiedl in Austria. The Youth division was dominated by JP-Australia and NeilPryde riders: Christian Justesen DEN-26 is the new Formula World Champion, followed by Mateus Isaac BRA-767 as Vice-Champion and Elia Colombo SUI-63 in third.

CONGRATULATIONS to all three !

The new Formula Windsurfing Youth World Champion  Christian reports:

“Wow – my dream came true!!! I have been dreaming about this for the last 3 years, since I won the World Championship Junior Slalom in Hyeres in 2010. It is an amazing feeling standing in the center of the podium, knowing that you are the best in the whole World… YEESSS!
I wish everybody could experience this once!

This year everything has worked out perfectly for me: I got the new NP Evo V 10.7, as one of the first sailors together with the new FX 100 mast. It was sent to me when I was in Sydney Australia to participate in the great FW event “Oceanic 2013”. The sail has been developed by my training partner Sebastian Kornum and this enabled me to get a head start trimming and fine tuning. The combination has been working very well for me and for the ‘Worlds’ in Austria: I knew exactly how to trim for the conditions on Neusiedler See where it is flat water in both, 6-10 knots light wind and fully powered 15-21 knots on the edge.

I have the JP Formula Power for 2 years now and know all the strong sides of this unique board better than my pocket :-) together with the right fin it was just a true rocket on the flat water.

Day 1
…we had marginal winds, and didn’t complete any races, but I got a really good chance to do some smaller adjustments on the batten tension on the sail to generate even more power by adjusting the base a few millimeters. After that, everything was ready to race and we were really just waiting for the wind.

Day 2
Next day we completed 2 races in very light conditions: My set-up was tuned and I made a 2nd and one bullet. So, I was in front of the fleet together with Rytis Jasiunas. Rytis is extremely fast in light conditions, so I knew he would be a very tough competitor, if the next days would not give us more wind.

Day 3
…came up with perfect racing conditions, 10 to 20 knots and we managed to do 4 races. As the wind was offshore and very gusty, I decided to go with my medium trim on the 10.7. First race I was fully powered and under immense physical pressure. I was glad I had put so much work in the gym this season as I was able to hold and lock the equipment fully – I have never sailed that fast on Formula equipment – it was almost as sailing slalom! Out of nothing came Elia Colombo SUI-63 (also on NP/JP) to take the bullet and I came second in this race. Later I found out that he was on the NP EVO V 10.0 which is a very strong and fast combination with the JP Formula Power.

The next 2 races I took 2 bullets. In one of these races managed to build a solid lead of 2 minutes, tacking and jibing on the many wind shifts.
Last race was won by last years’ World Champion Mateus Isaac BRA-767 (again -also on NP/JP) and I finished in 3rd spot. Mateus was sailing really well and managed to put in some god races taking him up to the 2 place in the overall ranking.

The result after 6 races and still 2 days to go was:
1st – Christian Justesen DEN 26 – JP-Australia/NeilPryde – 7 points
2nd – Mateus Isaac BRA 767 – JP-Australia/NeilPryde – 13 points
3rd – Elia Colombo SUI-63 – JP-Australia/NeilPryde – 18 points

As the wind decided to have a break and leave the sun to shine over Lake Neusiedl and all the competitors, there was no more sailing the next 2 days and the result was also the final one.”

A more perfect result for JP/NP than ever before – all Formula Youth podium places for the NP Racing EVO V and the JP FORMULA POWER – we all three will enter the Men’s class next year, so
“Watch out old guy’s :-)” says the new World Champion Christian Justesen DEN-26 from Skive Windsurfing Club in Denmark.

Family Business:

Worth mentioning that Mateus’ father Carlos Alberto Isaac BRA-768, who is a super motivated rider, also participated at this event and finished 12th in the Open Class and was the 8th Grand Master.
And Elia’s brother Matteo Colombo SUI-163 finished 15th in the Youth division.
